Magentism test 24/06/24 Flashcards
two like poles
repel
two opposite poles
attract
the earth is a
magnet
there is a
North and South pole
compasses and magnets that are free to spin will
naturally line up with the earths magnetic field
only metals are
Magnetic
4 magnetic materials are
iron
cobalt
nickel
steel
There are two ways to test for magnetism.
place your object next to a known magnetic materiel and see if they attract.
place a known magnet next to your object if you can make them repel then the object must be a magnet.
a magnetic field is
A regional of space where a magnetic material experiences a magnet force
magnets can attract
other magnets and magnetic materials
magnets can only repel
other magnets
magnetic fields are made of field lines
we indicate the direction of field lines using arrows these point form north to south
an electromagnet is made form a current carrying wire such as
a Solenoid
you can increase the strength is an electro magnet in 3 ways
increase the current
addmore turns to the solenoid
pug a soft-iron core in the centre
you can switch on an electromagnet by
passing a current through it
you can switch off an electromagnet by
stopping passing current through it
iron is used for electromagnet cores because
it’s a soft magnetic material this means it’s easy to magnetise and demagnetise
A Strong magnet will have
A steel core which is for permanent magnets because it is hard to magnetise but keeps its magnetism.
A soft magnet will have
an iron core because it is soft and used in temporary magnets because it’s easy to magnetise but also loses its magnetism easily
A motor is made from a loop of rotor coil
when current flows through the wire a magnetic field is produced around the wire
the current in each side of the wire flows in opposite directions so one side is pushed up and the other pushed down causing it to rotate
