Macromolecules Flashcards
What are the four key atoms in an organism ?
Hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, oxygen
What are the 3 major types of chemical bonds?
ionic, covalent, metallic
In which type of bond do atoms share electrons?
Weak or strong bond?
Covalent, strong
What is electronegativity
the pull of an atom for -e
How does electronegativity effect atoms
the more strongly an atom attracts the electrons in its bonds the larger is electronegativity
When do electrons have a low level of potential energy?
When they are associated with a more electronegative atom
What happens to a macromolecule in a hydrolysis reaction ?
They form smaller molecules that can be absorbed by cells then further broken down to release energy
What are the four categories of organic macromolecules ?
Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, nucleic acids
