What are microcytic anemias (MCV <80) usually due to?

A

Lack of hemoglobin production

  • Iron deficiency
  • Defect in heme group / protoporphyrin ring synthesis (Sideroblastic anemia)
  • Defect in the heme protein itself (Thalassemias)
  • Anemia of chronic disease (Can also be normocytic)
