What is macrocytic anaemia
low haemogobin with large mean cell volume
2 Types:
- Megaloblastic (B12/ folate deficiency)
- Non-megaloblastic
what are the 2 types of macrocytic anaemia
Megaloblastic- B12 / folate deficiency
Non-megaloblastic- alcohol, liver disease, myelodisplasia
what is pernicious anaemia
type of megaloblastic anaemia
autoimmune condition where intrinsic factor isnt made in the stomach which stops the body from being able to absorb B12
how does macrocytic anaemia present
- fatigue
- brittle nails (onychoschizia)
- loss of appetite/ weight
- palpitations
- pale skin, lips, eyelids
- SOB
how do you invesitgate macrocytic anaemia
FBC:
- low Hb
- high MCV >95
- often low folate and B12
how do you manage macrocytic anaemia
B12 and folate Injections
Diet modifications if deficiency
Supplements
what are the complications of of macrocytic anaemia if left untreated
heart failure
circulatory problems
peripheral neuropathy
dementia
