Analysis of “turn, hell-hound, turn”
Repetition of “turn” : emphasises Macbeth’s upheaval of order through his tyrannical rule as he has turned the order of Scotland into chaos during his rule.
Alt - one Macbeth “turns” to face Macduff, Macduff knows he will be able to reinstate order within Scotland.
Epithet of “hell-hound” : The epithet create an infernal image emphasising Macduff’s condemnation of Macbeth’s diabolical ambitions and the ensuing turmoil.
Alt - the epithet of “hell-hound” connotes strongly to the Devil and is opposing to God. Done by Shakespeare to show that if you commit regicide, you will be one with the devil and will be condemned by God.
Antithesis : Macduff is the antithesis to Macbeth - Macbeth prioritises his own selfish ambitions whereas Macduff places his country and the people that reside in it at the forefront of his concerns.
