Macbeth Supernatural Flashcards
“Hie thee hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine ear”
Act 1 Scene 5
“spirits”
Reflective of the witches’ language
Shakespeare is already introducing L. Macbeth as a formidable character
In the Jacobean era, witches were associated with chaos and corruption, which Lady Macbeth will inevitably cause.
“pour”
Sounds like witchcraft
If you pour something, its flowing is uncontrollable.
This suggests that spirits will take control of Macbeth.
The person pouring is the one who has control which is Lady Macbeth. It is as if she is at the cauldron.
Lady Macbeth is calculating, like a witch.
“The raven himself is hoarse
That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan.”
Lady Macbeth, Act 1, Scene 5
“raven”
Hoarse from constant croaking.
Ravens are often associated with death, which is foreshadowing Duncan’s death.
“fatal”
Sense of foreboding
