Q

Explain the significance of the following quote:
“I have no spur
To prick the sides of my intent, but only
Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself
And falls on th’other”

A

(Answers will vary)
Macbeth compares making the decision of whether to go ahead with the murder of King Duncan with horse riding. He describes being unable to commit regicide by comparing himself to a rider who cannot use his spurs to get his horse to go faster. The only thing that is keeping him going is ambition which is similar to a rider who overestimates their ability to leap over an obstacle and fail. This displays that he would be unwilling to go ahead with the plan if it wasn’t for his desire to become king, which will lead him down a dangerous path.

Q

How does Lady Macbeth defy traditional gender roles?

Provide a quote to support your explanation.

A
  1. She takes on masculine characteristics in order to commit the murder of King Duncan. She exchanges the gentleness and weakness of femininity for the strength and courage of manhood.
  2. She controls Macbeth and dictates his actions. She is in full control of the murderous plots. The Elizabethan audience would have understood women to be submissive and controlled by their husbands, unlike Lady Macbeth.

Possible quote-
“Come, you spirits
That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here,
And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full
Of direst cruelty!”
