Macbeth Acts 2-3 Flashcards
I have thee not, and yet I see thee still.
Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but
A dagger of the mind, a false creation
Proceeding from the heat-oppressèd brain
Who says this?
What does the dagger represent?
Macbeth says this quote
The dagger represents Macbeth’s inner desire to kill Duncan
Where we are, There’s daggers in men’s smiles. The near in blood, The nearer bloody.
Who says this?
What does it mean?
Donalbain says this
It means that it can be hard to trust people
The theme of appearance vs. reality
The people you are related to can turn against you
As the Weïrd Women promised, and I fear Thou played’st most foully for ’t.
Who says this?
What does it mean?
Banquo
It means that he sees the prophecy coming true, but is suspicious that Macbeth became king in an unfair way
To be thus is nothing, But to be safely thus. Our fears in Banquo Stick deep, and in his royalty of nature Reigns that which would be feared. ’Tis much he
dares,
And to that dauntless temper of his mind He hath a wisdom that doth guide his valor To act in safety
Who says this?
What does it mean?
Macbeth says this
Being King is useless if he is in danger. He scared of Banquo because Banquo is moral and Macbeth is not, so he would be a better ruler. Also, he is scared of Banquo’s prophecy
Naught’s had, all’s spent,
Where our desire is got without content. ’Tis safer to be that which we destroy Than by destruction dwell in doubtful joy.
Who says this?
What does it mean?
Lady Macbeth
Bring King and queen is not as good as she expected, since they are in danger. It would be better to be dead and it have to worry that to live with the fact that you killed someone
We have scorched the snake, not killed it. She’ll close and be herself whilst our poor malice Remains in danger of her former tooth.
What’s this?
What does it mean?
Macbeth
Their plan didn’t solve everything, they still need to worry about Banquo
How is Banquo a foil for Macbeth?
Banquo is loyal to Duncan, but Macbeth is not
Both friends
have the same rank
Both wants power, but Macbeth acts on it, and Banquo resists the temptation
