Macbeth Flashcards
“Enter Banquo and Fleance with a torch”
The scene is set at night, this adds to the under- handedness and evil nature of the act, as Macbeth seeks to have Banquo killed in the dark
Doctor: “Not so sick my lord as she is troubled”
By having Lady Macbeth’s last onstage appearance being her troubled and sick, Shakespeare can show that Lady Macbeth is haunted by her actions, even to her death.
“You know your own degrees, sit down.”
Throughout the scene, Macbeth remains standing, even when the others sit. This shows Macbeth’s supposed power over the others as King. It is usually distrruspectful to sit in the presence of a monarch - they sit first.
“Enter Macbeth as King
Lady Macbeth as queen”
Shakespeare not showing their coronation shows just how startlingly fast Macbeth’s rise to power has been, in one way showing the misplaced trust people have for him was never suspected.
