Macbeth Flashcards
What quote in Act 1 shows the theme of confusion will be present throughout the play?
‘Fair is foul and foul is fair’
What is said by the witches to show they can tell the future in Act 1?
‘All hail Macbeth, that shall be king hereafter!’
What quote in Act 1, said by Banquo, links to the common theme of time and nature whilst also adding to the fact the witches can look to the future.
‘If you can look into the seeds of time, and say which grain will grow and which will not, speak then to me’
What quote speaks of Banquo’s offspring becoming in charge of Scotland?
‘Thou shalt get Kings, though thou be none.’
What does this quote say about the character of Macbeth? He says these words to Duncan in act one.
‘Nothing in his life became like him leaving it.’
Macbeth is ruthless about his peers and only likes them if they are fierce as he is but due to this quote it is clear Macbeth is bitter and disapproves of him. This is due to the fact he said the best thing he did was die.
Duncan says a quote during Act 1 to Malcolm. Explain how this may apply to the later actions of the characters and how this quote is made irrelevant and is disproven later on in the play.
‘There’s no art to find the mind’s construction in the face.’
This quote is ironic due to the fact that both Macbeth and the Thane of Cawdor both fool Duncan later in the play. They both deceive him and make him look a fool due to his lack of intelligence of reading people. Duncan clearly doesn’t know how to give advice as later on in the play his life is ended due to Macbeth murdering him even though he had planned it beforehand.
‘Stars, hide your fires: Let not lights see my black and deep desires.’
This quote explains a lot about the character Macbeth and how he will evolve and change throughout. Explain how this quote may link to his change of heart later in the play?
The quote shows how Macbeth is seen as a loyal warrior but deep down over everything he has been given from the king and his men, he wants to take the thrown for him self and will do anything to get what he wants.
What is said by Lady Macbeth in Act 1 which shows the audience the character she portrays throughout the play?
‘Look like th’ innocent flower, But be the serpent under ‘t’
What is said by Macbeth in Act 2 which expresses his recent confusion and makes not just him but the audience think that the play may begin to switch between fantasy and reality?
‘Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.’
Lady Macbeth really becomes quite confident in Act 2 Scene 2 after she has had her encounter with the guards. What does she say after making the guards drunk?
‘That hath made them drunk hath made me bold. What hath quenched them hath given me fire.’
This quote shows that since she has become drunk, she is a lot more confident and she believes she is stronger than ever but as the audience knows she is under the influence of alcohol.
What quote in Act 2 is said by Lady Macbeth which could represent fear and could show a little bit of heart as she is afraid for her husband being caught but it could also be seen as an act of greed due to her only caring about herself and not her lover?
‘Alack, I am afraid they have awaked, And ‘tis not done.’
The quote ‘laid their daggers ready; he could not miss ‘em. Had he not resembled my father as he slept, I had done’t.’ shows how Lady macbeth said she would of killed Duncan but he resembled her father. How does this show a different side of her of which we have already seen? (Act 3)
Lady Macbeth is always seen as a fearless and brutal woman but it comes to show that she is caring like others and will not kill someone who looks like a family member. It shows their is something underneath her hard exterior.
Name the quote of which Banquo says in his soliloquy about his suspicions about Macbeth.
‘…and I fear thou play’dst most folly for it.’
What does this quote mean for the future of Macbeth’s life?
‘It is concluded. Banquo, thy soul’s flight, if it find heaven, must find it out tonight.’ (Act 3)
He is ordering for his best friend to be killed as he believes he will turn on him. He is clearly going crazy as he is making his guards kill his closest friend.
What is said by Lady Macbeth to comfort Macbeth and for him to know how what has happen cannot be changed or adjusted? (Act 3)
‘what’s done is done.’
