Role Reversal
- Macbeth leads the way with the plan to kill Banquo (“go with me”)
- He protects her this time, “Be innocent of the knowledge”
- Manipulates the murderers
- Has no moral compass
Cunning/Deceptive
Asks Banquo a series of questions to decipher his whereabouts that evening.
Perspective
He fears Banquo’s character because he reads his attributes perfectly: B is wise and noble (“royalty of nature”)
Macbeth banishes the ghost of Banquo
- The turning point of this character
- Symbolic for banishing in his conscience. At this point he descends into tyranny.
- “Unreal mockery hence.”
Overly ambitious/Greed for power
- “safely thus”
- “Fruitless crown”
- Now he wants to challenge faith and the witches prophecy.
Unstable emotionally
“Then comes my fit again.”
Performs the role of king and loyal friend to perfection. Doesn’t need his wife to prop him up.
- “false face”
- “I’ll request your presence” to B
Is Macbeth descending into the world of darkness and evil?
- Without hesitation, he murdered 2 innocent men.
Guilty conscience
“…rancours in the vessel of my peace.”
The scene (A2, S3) Macbeth is changed and in control now
“meet i’the hall.”
Manipulative just like Lady Macbeth
He convinces the men to commit the crime/the murder of Banquo by questioning their manhood.
Shrews: ASks Banquo a series of pointed questions without igniting suspicion

Ruthless
“Whos absence is no less material to me than his father’s.”
“Tis’ better there without than he within.”
