Q

A quote from act one scene one about the witches and them being supernatural.

F I F A F I F H T T F A F A

A

“fair is foul and, foul is fair.
Hover through the fog and filthy air”

the quote is said in unison suggesting the witches are supernatural and can predict what they all say. seems rehearsed.

this quote happens in act one scene one when the witches open the play.

About the supernatural
said by the witches
first half suggests the world is untrustworthy and you won’t get or want what you expect. So for Macbeth becoming the king would be fair if he had waited. but Macbeth makes it foul by committing regicide.

the way the quote is said (in trochaic tetrameter) is very childlike and almost like a nursery rhyme. gives off a different idea to the more serious ideas.

pathetic fallacy- the witches can control the weather and choose what the atmosphere is

A quote from lady Macbeth about her desire to be cruel.

U M H , A F M, F T C T T T, T F O D C

A

unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty.

she is saying in order to succeed in society you need to be a man and a quality if a man is cruelty

Lady Macbeth wants to achieve the cruelty and would want to become masculine to do that. the quote is not saying she wants to become masculine but she wants to be a cruel person.

the adjective direst suggests she wants the absolute worst.

Q

How does Shakespeare show Macbeths fatal flaw

A

Macbeth has been thinking about whether or not he should murder Duncan. He reaches the conclusion that the only thing that is motivating him (his ‘spur’) is ambition which he compares to a horse leaping over an obstacle (‘vaulting ambition’). As for the horse and rider, what is on the other side of the obstacle is unknown - it could, of course, be disaster. However, before Macbeth can complete the thought and turn away from the crime, he is interrupted by Lady Macbeth entering. Had she not appeared at this point, the outcome might have been different.

quote- I have no spur… but only Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself And falls on th’other – / [Enter Lady Macbeth] / How now? What news? (Act 1 Scene 7)

24
Q

in what ways is ambition Macbeths biggest weakness/ fatal flaw

A
  1. At the start he is a hero Duncan calls him noble.
  2. He is reluctant to kill Duncan shows that he is moral but his actions show how strong his ambition is

beliefs banquo is loyal to his own sense of honour he won’t let the witches predictions affect him.

26
Q

in what ways do the Macbeths pretend to be loyal

A
  1. Macbeth is initially loyal to Duncan which makes it even more shocking when he puts his desires ahead of his loyalty.
  2. lady Macbeth fakes loyalty she tells Duncan that her and macbeth are “ your servants ever” while at the same time plotting his murder.

A

in act 4 scene 3 Malcom describes good kings as: “king- becoming graces As justice, verity, temperance, stableness, bounty, perseverance, mercy, lowliness, devotion, patience, courage fortitude”
