Macbeth’s loyal friend, who suspects foul play.

King of Scotland, whom Macbeth murders to seize the throne.
Malcolm
Duncan’s son and rightful heir to the throne.
Witches
Supernatural beings who prophesy Macbeth’s rise and downfall.
Theme
The main idea or underlying message of a literary work.
eg. Commitment, Responsibility Influence, Greed, Ambition, Power, Manipulation, Pride
Motif
A recurring symbol or idea that helps develop the theme.
eg. blood, death, supernatural (withces), battle, violence, gore
Tragic Hero
A protagonist with a fatal flaw that leads to their downfall.
Dramatic Irony
When the audience knows something the characters don’t.
Soliloquy
A speech in which a character reveals their thoughts and feelings.
Aside
A character’s remark that is heard by the audience but not other characters.
Antithesis
The use of contrasting ideas or words for emphasis.
