M8.4 Flashcards
What are the types of stability?
Static stability and dynamic stability
What are the types of static stability?
- positive stability (damped)
- neutral stability (undamped)
- negative stability (divergent)
What is dynamic stability?
It is the continuous motion of a body varies over time
What are the three types of dynamic stability?
- undamped oscillation (stays constant)
- damped oscillation (goes to zero)
- divergent oscillation(gets bigger)
What are the three aircraft axis?
- longitudinal axis
- vertical axis
- lateral axis
What is the vertical axis?
It is the axis that the aircraft uses to YAW!!
Directional stability
What is the longitudinal axis?
It is the axis that the aircraft uses to ROLL!!
Lateral stability
What is the lateral axis?
It is the axis that the aircraft uses for PITCH!!
Longitudinal stability
What is another word for directional stability?
Weathercock
What is the directional stability?
The stability for the vertical axis
What helps the directional stability?
- The vertical stabiliser
- sweepback of the wing
- keel surface(fin under tail)
- dorsal fin (fin on tail and fuselage)
What is the lateral stability?
The stability for the longitudinal axis
What helps the lateral stability?
Dihedral angles
What is side-slip?
When an aircraft glide to one side without changing flight direction
When does side slip occur?
When the aircraft yaws away from the relative wind but still heads in the same direction (basically drifting)
