M8 C16 - Properties of the Nucleus Flashcards
What is nuclear fission?
when a large nuclues splits into two smaller nuclei releasing enegry at the same time.
how does fission occur?
when a lose neutron joins with a nuclues, turning it into an unstable nucleus. This will break down in multiple nuclei and release enrgy and lose electrons
What is nuclear fusion?
when two smaller nuclei fuse to form a larger nucleus realsing enegry at the same time
What are the 3 types of radio active decay
Alpha Decay
Bet Decay
Gamma Decay
Briefly describe alpha decay
wheren an unstable atom’s nucelues relaease an alpha particle (2 protons & 2 neutrons) or heluim 4 nulceus
Briefly describe Gamma decay
emits high energy photons from an excited nuclues without particle emission. deosnt chnage nuclues mass or charge
Briefly describe Beta decay
**Occurs when the ratio of protons to neutoirns in the nuclues leads ot instability. **
- postive beta decay - proton tranforms itno a neutron, emits a positron & a nuetrino
- Negattive beta decay - nuetron tranfroms into a proton, emits a beta particle, and an antinuetrino
What formula can be used to find enegry from nucelar reactions?
Explain Half Life Decay
the time required fro a quanity to reduce to half its intial value., or called exponetial decay
Recite the half life decay equations
N(t) = quantity remaining
N(i) = intial Quanity
Λ = decay constant
t = time elsaped
whats the difference between fission and fusion?
