Stella parallax
Is a technique used to determine the distance to Stars that are relatively close to the earth, at distances less than 100pc
Parallax angle p
p=1/d
Wave source
A source of waves, such as light or sound - the object moving relative to an observer of the Doppler effect
Doppler effect
The change in frequency and wavelength of waves received from an object moving relative to an observer compared with what would be observed without relative motion
Blue shifted
Move towards the blue end of the spectrum, wave appears shorter
Galaxy moving towards the earth
Red shifted
Galaxy moving away from Earth
Wavelength appears longer
Hubbles law
The regression speed v of a galaxy is almost directly proportional to its distance d from the earth
Homogeneous
Uniform in terms of the distribution of matter across the universe when viewed on a sufficiently large scale
Isotopic
The same in all directions (for example the universe, appearing the same to any observer regardless of position)
Big Bang
The theory that at any moment in the past all the matter in the universe was contained in a singularity, the beginning of space and time, that expanded rapidly outwards
Dark energy
A hypothetical form of energy that fills all of space and would explain the accelerating expansion of the universe
