M3 - Metals, Part 2 Flashcards
machining
a process to remove unwanted materials from the work piece to produce the desired shape
work piece
the material and design
cutting tool
used to shape the material
machine tool
used to design the structure
fixture
it holds the devices in machining operations
cutting parameters
it is the depth of cut to be done on the material
primary machining process
turning, drilling, milling
turning
a type of machining which focuses on material removal by rotating the work piece while the cutting tool moves toward it in a linear path.
milling
a machining method that uses rotary cutters to remove unwanted materials from the work piece
lathe
the device where the work piece is attached and rotated during turning
boring
the cut is performed on the inside
facing
cut is done across the end
drilling
a process that cuts a hole of circular cross section in solid materials
joining process
fuse metals together with or without the application of heat or pressure
two kinds of joining
permanent joining and semi-permanent joining
permanent joining
The metals fused together cannot be separated. If able to, the parts will be damaged.
4 types of permanent joining
welding, brazing, soldering, and riveting
welding
metal parts are joined at their contacting surfaces by suitable heat, causing a coalescence
brazing
joining metals using a filler metal that includes a base of copper combined with silver, nickel, zinc, and phosphorus
filler metals
alloys or unalloyed metals, when heated, liquefy and melt to flow between two close fitting parts
soldering
joins materials by melting a solder, usually lead, into the joint
riveting
a two-headed and unthreaded bolt that holds two pieces of metals together
semi-permanent joining
designed to permanently join metals but it can be disassembled without damaging the parts
2 kinds of semi-permanent joining
screws
nuts & bolts
screws
joins parts together using a screw; does not need a nut but may use one if needed
nuts & bolts
uses a bolt and a nut to join two pieces together
finishing process
used to treat the exterior of the metal by applying a thin complimentary layer to its surface
7 types of finishing
metal plating brushed metal buff polishing metal grinding sand blasting powder coating hot blackening
metal plating
uses a chemical bath to coat the surface of a metal with a another thin layer of metal
brushed metal
creates a uniform, parallel grain surface texture to remove surface imperfections
buff polishing
gives the metal a smooth, non-textured finish using a cloth wheel to buff its surface
metal grinding
uses friction, attrition, and/or compression to smooth out a metal surface
sand blasting / bead blasting
forces sand or steel into a surface of a metal (particularly soft metals) with high speed, creating a uniform matte texture
powder coating
melting a dry plastic powder onto the metal to create a texture, matte, or glossy coating
hot blackening
spreading a thin layer of black oxide onto the surface to create a matte black finish with high abrasion resistance
