M252 & Mortar Employment Flashcards
What are the maximum and minimum degrees of angle and mil settings?
83* to 45*
1500mil to 800mil
How many mils are in one turn of the traversing and elevation knob?
10mils
Describe the 3 mortar element sizes and how many guns in each:
Squad: 1 gun, SL/AG/Gunner/AB
Section: 2 gun, Sec Sgt/SL/AG/Gunner/AB
Platoon: 4 gun, PL/PSG/2 Sec Sgt(FDC)/SL/AG/Gunner/AB
RSOP: name the factors of position selection
Mission Accomplishment (most important) Tactical situation Range Target area coverage Survivability Overhead and mask clearance Surface conditions Communications Routes
What is the range criteria for position selection?
Mortars should be able to fire at least one half to two thirds of their range to the front of the forward elements of the supported friendly force.
What is the most important step of RSOP?
Mission accomplishment
What is the difference between deliberate and hasty occupation?
The amount of time to prepare position by the recon team. (Hasty may get some prep done, but very minimal. Deliberate is covering all bases)
Under what two conditions may you displace the gun elements?
If contact is unlikely and if you have support of your local unit
If you can’t meet displacement criteria to move all at once, how should mortar elements travel?
By section or squad using successive or alternating bounding
What are the distances of separation for 60mm, 81mm, and 120mm in parallel formations?
60mm-30m
81mm-40m
120mm-70m
(Bursting diameter of HE ammo)
What are the 3 effects of IDF and describe them
Suppression- lowest standard - enemy not able to do their job
Neutralize - 10% casualties
Destroy - 30% casualties
Name and describe the fuze types fired by the M224:
Multioption M734: Proximity (1-4m above surface), Near Surface Burst (0-1m above ground), Impact (super quick- on surface), Delay (0.05 seconds after impact). No safety pins.
Point detonating M935: set to superquick or delay. Has pull wire safety.
Which fuze type is good for troops standing in the open?
Impact, Point Detonate, or NSB
Which fuze type is good for prone targets or in shallow fighting positions?
PRX or delay
Which fuze arms in flight, sends out radio waves waiting for object to give a splash back then goes off 1m above ground?
NSB
Which fuze type can hit a jungle canopy and then detonate once closer to ground?
Delay
Who makes up a basic gun crew?
Squad leader, Gunner, AG, AB
Explain the gun crew roles
Squad leader: supervise from rear of gun.
Gunner: on optic side, manipulates gun w firing data.
AG: opposite of Gunner, loads ammo, swabs bore, may move gun.
AB: preps ammo
After how many rounds should AG swab the bore?
10 rounds or end of fire mission
M253 cannon rates of fire
Sustained 15rpm Indefinitely
Max 30rpm for 2min
Ranges for the M253 cannon
Minimum: 83m
Maximum: 5608m
What power optic is the M67?

What is the range in mils of elevation for the M177A1 bipod?
0800 (max range) to 1511mils (min range)
What is the M3A2?
The daggon’ baseplate
What is total traversing in mils and also traversing from center to left or right on the bipod?
200m total. 100mil each way.
Can the bubbles be touching the outermost red lines on the optic?
No
