A
  1. If the home is less than 30 years old, the size of the main breaker usually determines the service size
  2. If the home is 30-40 years old, it probably has a main service panel which contains no main breaker, in this case, the rating on the panel indicates the service size
  3. If the home is older than 40 years, it will have a main fused switch
23
Q

The sustainability and safety of the electrical system will vary with the size and type of wire used. List and briefly explain the 3 most common types of wire utilized

A
  1. Knob and Tube Wiring- found in homes built prior to 1950, it can look dangerous but if properly installed it can be just as safe as modern wiring systems. It stopped being used because it became too expensive with 3 wiring systems. If the plugs in a home have only two holes in them, the wiring is probably knob and tube. It uses copper wire.
  2. Aluminum Wiring- Just as safe as copper wire if installed properly. The problem with aluminum is that is oxidizes and expands more than copper resulting in the joints between the wires to overheat and seperate forming a gap.
  3. Copper Wiring- avaliable in a wide variety of sizes to accommadate different electrical loads. These systems can be very safe.
