M15.4 Compressors Flashcards
Two components of compressor
Rotors
Stators
Is a rotor or stator first in the compressor stage?
Rotor always first part
What are the blades attached to stators called?
Stator vanes
What do stator vanes do?
They guide and slow the airflow to cause an increase in pressure
If there is a set of stator vanes in front of the compressor stage what are they called?
Inlet guide vanes (IGV)
The stator vanes in the fan duct are known as what?
Outlet guide vanes (OGV)
What are outlet guide vanes used for?
Improving airflow into the fan nozzle
Two types of compressors in gas turbine engines?
Centrifugal flow compressor
Axial flow compressor
Centrifugal flow compressors consist of what components?
Impeller (Rotors)
A diffuser (Stator)
A compressor manifold
Function of an impeller?
Pick up and accelerate the air outwardly to diffuser
Axial flow compressors are used on what engines?
Turbofan engines
Centrifugal flow compressors are used on what type of engines?
Turboprop and Turboshaft engines
What is a ‘stage’ of an axial flow compressor?
Rotor-Stator pair
How many stages are centrifugal compressors limited to?
2 stages
How are fan blades numbered?
Generally numbered in direction of rotation
Where can compressor surges occur in the compressor?
Forward or aft stages
Reasons for stall or surges in compressor?
Dents or ice reduce inlet velocity
Damaged rotor blades or stator vanes disturb airflow
Dirty compressor blades
Two operational reasons for stall and surge?
Compressor can stall if the speed of engine is too far below design speed
Can stall at incorrect acceleration or deceleration
What are bleed valves and where are they found?
Found in mid-section and sometimes aft of compressor
Open at low speeds so excessive airflow from fwd stages escape overboard.
3 methods to avoid stall or surge?
Bleed valves
Dual or triple spools
Variable stator vanes
Advantage of variable stator vanes?
An optimum angle of attack can be reached for every engine speed
Disadvantage of variable stator vanes?
Needs a complicated control mechanism
What is a compression ratio?
The ratio of the volume of its combustion chamber from its largest to its smallest capacity
