Defining the Postmodern
Main difference between modern and postmodern
No longer “any close linkage between the architectural project and socio-historical progress in the realisation of human emancipation on the larger scale”
No illusion of progress within rationality and freedom
Return of the Repressed
High freq of elements from previous styles or periods, giving up the consideration of environment
Idea of modernity and why problematic
It is possible and necessary to begin an entirely new way of thinking, to break with tradition. But breaking only means forgetting or repressing the past, not overcoming it, meaning it is doomed to be repeated
Incredulity towards metanarratives; good that we have left them behind in favour of local narratives
“Human entities (individual or social) seem always to be destabilised by the results of development”
Working through of old styles eg e hoes in architecture
Healthy, like a Freudian therapy: we are working through repressed trauma by returning to the last, confronting and overcoming it.
