LOCATION
Small settelement on East bank of River Exe estuary in East Devon

Tidal mudflats extend into Exe estuary
Location on estuary was key in early stages
in 13th century it was trading port with cross-channel links with France
Up until 19th century: shipbuilding (started to decline as ships got bigger)
19th century: fishing (shellfish) in estuary + out to N Atlantic to fish cod + do whaling
Past characteristics
Mid 19th century: Tourism came to Lympstone - ‘wealthy’ Victorians who wanted to be by sea
- accomodation + facilities built to meet demand (cottages, Swan Inn pub)
- many ‘listed’ buildings from 19th century - strict planning rules in heart of village to preserve built environment history
Railway arrived in 1861 - shellfish fisherman could sell products to wider markets as less time to transport + residents could travel to Exeter more easily -> time-space compression (distances between places appears ‘closer’ as travel time reduced
- 20th century-now: railway still important - acts as key infrastructure for commuting
Built environment
Detached + semi-detached housing in modern suburb on edge of village - meets demand of Lympstone as DORMITORY settlement (sleep in lympstone but commute to work elsewhere)
Demographic
more ethnically homogenous than Toxteth - 99% white
- due to few main urban centres in Devon (Plymouth + Exeter) = less migration
- agriculture + tourism were main economic activities - few migrant jobs
- gap between rural-urban areas in Devon (plymouth 92% white)
