Lymphoma Overview Flashcards
What are the two main types of lymphoma?
Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
What organs are included in the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system includes the bone marrow, spleen, thymus, lymph nodes, and lymphatic vessels.
What is the largest lymphatic organ?
The spleen is the largest lymphatic organ.
What functions does the spleen serve?
The spleen recycles red blood cells and houses lymphocytes that help contest certain types of bacteria.
What role does the lymphatic system play in relation to red blood cells?
Red blood cells are eliminated by the lymphatic system and portions of the blood help produce lymph.
What does lymph fluid carry throughout the body?
Lymph fluid carries antibodies, nutrients, and lymphocytes throughout the body and provides protection while filtering harmful particles that may give rise to infection and disease.
What happens to lymph nodes when bacteria are present?
Lymph nodes become swollen when bacteria are present and when the body produces more lymphocytes to fight infection.
How are lymphomas categorized?
Lymphomas are divided into 2 major categories: Hodgkin’s Lymphomas (HLs) and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphomas (NHLs).
What characterizes Hodgkin’s Lymphomas?
Hodgkin’s disease is marked by the presence of a type of cell called the Reed-Sternberg cell.
What does Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphomas include?
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphomas includes a large diverse group of cancers of immune system cells.
