Lymphocytes Flashcards
What is the function of lymphatic capillaries?
To drain excess fluid from intercellular spaces and return it to the blood stream
What is the lymphatic system?
Protects the body against invasion by disease-causing agents called pathogens.
What are the major functions of the system?
- Transport dietary lipids
- Carries out specific (adaptive) immune responses
- Drains excess interstitial fluid and returns it to blood
Where does lymph fluid go?
Passes through lymph nodes where foreign substances are filtered out and macrophages(WBC) destroy them.
What is the major difference between interstitial fluid and lymph fluid?
Location
Lymph fluid-within lymphatic vessels
Interstitial fluid- cells
What do lymphatic vessels do?
Collect fluids from capillaries and transport it through lymph nodes
What do vessels have?
Valves to prevent backflow
What is the primary function of immune system?
To identify foreign substances in the body and develop a defense against them
How does immune system recognize itself?
Thru MHC
Where are class 1 MHC located ?
On the surface of all body cells
Where are class 2 MHC found?
Proteins are only found on surface of some immune cells called antigen presenting cells.
What is innate immunity?
Produces non-specific responses
Is present before any exposure to pathogens
What is adaptive immunity ?
Only found in the vertebrates and must be activated by exposure to a specific invader.
What is recognition of the pathogen is by white blood cells called?
Lymphocytes
What are the two main types of lymphocytes that circulate?
B lymphocytes
T lymphocytes
