Lymphatic System Flashcards
What does the Lymphatic system include?
Lymph vessels, organs, T and B lymphocytes
What are the major extracellular fluids and where are they located?
Blood plasma (fluid in blood), Interstitual fluid (bathes cells: except blood cells), Lymph (inside lymphatic vessels)
How is interstitual fluid formed?
formed when the capillaries leak plasma
How much of the ISF re-enters the blood in capillaries and vessels and how much of it goes to the lymphatic circulation (now called lymph)?
90% goes to the blood and 10% goes the lymphatic circulation
What do lymphatic capillaries connect to?
lymphatic collecting vessels (bacteria and debris)
What filters the lymphs?
lymph nodes along the lymphatic connecting vessels
In what direction do the lymph vessels carry the lymph fluids (away or towards) and to where?
they carry them AWAY and to 1) the right lymphatic duct and 2) thoracic duct
What is the right lymphatic duct and what does it do?
collects form right head, chest and arm; drains into right subclavican vein, re-entering blood circulation
What is the thoracic duct?
collecting vessels from below the ribs converge to an enlarged lymph vessel (cisterna chyli)
What is the function of the thoracic duct?
drains lymph into left subclavian vein, re-entering blood circulation
What are the primary lymphatic organs and tissues?
red bone marrow and thymus glands
What do the thymus glands produce?
T lymphocytes; they mature and proliferate here
What is made in red bone marrow and what two things can be produced from it?
lymphoid stem cells; when they remain in bone marrow they produce b lymphocytes
OR
migrate to thymus glands
What are the secondary lymphatic organs and tissues?
lymph nodes, spleen, mucosal associated lymphoid tissues (MALT)
Where are the lymph nodes located?
cervical, axillary (armpit), inguinal (groin), intestinal, pelvic
