Lymphatic System Flashcards
What are the primary functions of the lymphatic system?
Transportation of lymph fluid, filtering and removing pathogens, aiding in immune responses and returning excess interstitial fluid to the bloodstream.
How does the lymphatic system contribute to the immune system?
Transporting WBC, such as lymphocytes and facilitating filtration of pathogens through lymph nodes .
What are T Lymphocytes? What is their role in immune responses?
Type of WBC that is involved in cell-mediated immunity, recognising and attacking foreign or altered cells through activating phagocytes. Part of adaptive immunity.
What are B Lymphocytes?
WBC responsible for producing antibodies that combine and neutralise pathogens to prevent infection. Part of the humoral (antibody mediated) immune response.
What is the difference between innate and adaptive immune response?
Innate immunity is the first line of defence against infection that acts quickly and non-specifically, whereas adaptive immune responses are slower and more specialised, involving the targeting of specific pathogens.
What are the key differences between primary and secondary immune response?
Primary responses occur upon first exposure to an antigen and are slower, while secondary responses are faster and more efficient due to previously activated memory lymphocytes.
Why are tonsils important in prevention of infections?
First line of defence against microorganisms entering the mouth.
What is the thymus?
Responsible for producing and maturing T Lymphocytes and is important in developing animals.
How does lymph fluid move?
Relies on gravity and pressure from muscles squeezing.
