Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is the primary role of the lymphatic system?
It is a secondary transport system from the blood circulatory system.
What does the lymphatic system return to the blood?
Tissue fluid from around the cells.
What is tissue fluid composed of?
Plasma without RBC’s, platelets or large proteins.
How does tissue fluid primarily return to the plasma?
Through blood capillaries.
What is lymph?
Fluid that enters dead ending lymph vessels, made from tissue fluid and contains white blood cells, proteins and fats.
How is lymph moved through the lymphatic system?
By muscles in the vessel walls and general bodily movements.
What role do valves play in the lymphatic system?
They help control the direction of lymph flow.
Where does lymph return to the blood?
In the subclavian veins (near collar bone).
What are lymph nodes?
Swellings found along lymph vessels that filter bacteria.
What do lymph nodes store?
Lymphocytes, which can kill micro-organisms and produce antibodies.
What is one function of the lymphatic system?
To collect tissue fluid and return it to the blood.
How does the lymphatic system defend the body against infection?
By filtering micro-organisms in lymph nodes, storing lymphocytes, and destroying micro-organisms by engulfing & digesting them/antibodies.
What does the lymphatic system absorb and transport?
Fats in the digestive system.
Where is lymph found in the digestive system?
In lacteals in the small intestine.
Fill in the blank: Tissue fluid is plasma without _____, platelets or large proteins.
RBC’s
