Lymphatic System Flashcards
Lymphatic system structure
Consists of lymph, lymphatic vessels,
structures and organs containing lymphatic tissue, and red bone marrow
Lymphatic system function
- Drain excess interstitial fluid to maintain fluid balance
- Absorption of fats from digestive tract that are too large to enter the blood capillaries -Lacteals (LAK-te-als)
- Carry our immune responses (lymphocytes and lymphoid tissue)
Components of the lymphatic system
Palatine tonsils, cervical node, right lymphatic duct, auxillary node, thymus gland, aggregated lymphatic follicle, cisterna chyli, inguinal node
4 Characteristics of lymphatic capillaries
– Closed at one end
–Permeable: Permits interstitial fluid to
flow in but not out
–Slightly larger diameter than blood
capillaries
– Unique one-way structure
Lymph nodes function
Lymph nodes function as a filter.
–Foreign substances are trapped and
destroyed by macrophages or immune
response of lymphocytes
(Phagocytosis)
Lymph nodes Location
along lymphatic vessels
6 Ways Of Maintaining a healthy lymphatic system
- Healthy Diet
- Refrain from smoking or using any tobacco products
- Reduce Alcohol in take
- Adequate amount of rest and sleep
- Adequate water intake
- Reduce stress factors
