Lymphatic/Immune System Flashcards
What does the lymphatic system consist of?
- lymph
- lymphatic vessels
- lymphatic tissue/organs
- lymphocytes, phagocytes and other immune system cells
What is the lymphatic system function?
- protect against disease
- drainage of interstitial fluid
- transporting dietary lipids and lipid soluble vitamins (A D E K)
- facilitation of immune response
What is lymphatic capillaries?
- capillaries that begin as blind ended tubes
- structure helps to let fluid in but not out
What is the fluid inside lymphatic capillaries called?
Lymph
What is lymph capillaries in intestinal villi called?
Lacteals
Lymphatic system (circulation).
- blood plasma (from capillaries)
- interstitial/tissue fluid
- lymphatic capillary
- lymph vessels, trunks and ducts
- blood plasma (vein at base of neck)
What are lymph vessels?
- thin walls
- resemble veins but have more valves
- have lymph nodes at intervals
- respiratory and muscular pumps promote flow of lymph towards large veins/heart
What are primary lymphatic organs?
- red bone marrow
- thymus
What are second lymphatic organs?
- spleen
- lymph nodes
What are diffuse lymphatic tissue?
- tonsils, adenoids and peyer’s patches
What is thymus gland?
- found in mediastinum above heart
- large in infancy and atrophied but functional in adulthood
- makes thymosin hormones
- T cells mature here
What are lymph nodes?
- surrounded by connective tissue capsule
- each compartment made up of reticulocytes
- filter lymph
What is between the reticular cells?
Lymphocytes
What do lymphocytes produce?
Antibodies
Where is the spleen?
- between stomach and diaphragm
What does the spleen do?
- stores and releases blood and blood cells
- macrophages remove worn out or defective RBC, WBC and platelets
What is MALT?
Mucosa Associated Lymphoid Tissue
A lymphocyte production is known as?
Lymphopoiesis
Where are lymphocytes produced?
- in lymphoid tissue (tonsils)
- lymphoid organs (spleen, thymus)
- in red bone marrow
Function of lymphocyte?
- detect problems
- travel into site of injury or infection
Types of lymphocytes?
- T cells (thymus dependent)
- B cells (bone marrow derived)
- NK cells (natural killer cells)
