They are found in clusters, which form glands, in areas of the body such as the tonsils, adenoids, neck, armpits, thymus, spleen and groin.

Lymph nodes fight infection in two ways:

- They filter bacteria and other harmful material from lymph as it passes through.
- They mature and store large numbers of white blood cells called lymphocytes. Some of these lymphocytes kill micro-organisms directly; others make antibodies, which help to neutralise micro-organisms.
