Signs & Sx

Early Infection (one or more may be present at different times during infection)

A
  • Red rash (erythema migrans)
  • Flulike symptoms (fever, headache, stiff neck, fatigue)
  • Migratory musculoskeletal pain (joints, bursae, tendons, muscle, or bone)
Neurologic symptoms:
• Severe headache (meningitis)
• Numbness, pain, weakness of extremities
• Poor motor coordination
• Cognitive dysfunction: Memory loss, difficulty
in concentrating, mood changes, sleep
disturbances
Less Common Symptoms
• Eye problems such as conjunctivitis
• Heart abnormalities and myocarditis

Late I n f e c t i o n (months to years after infection)

A
  • Arthritis, intermittent or chronic
  • Encephalopathy (mood and sleep disturbances)
  • Neurocognitive dysfunction
  • Peripheral neuropathy
