lung measurment Flashcards
define breathing rate
number of breaths taken in one minute
define tidal volume
volume of air taken in and out with one breath when at rest - usually 0.5 dm3
define residual volume
volume of air that remains in the lungs after a force expiration
remains in airways
define vital capacity
maximum volume of air that can be moved by the lungs in one breath
define total lung capacity
-vital capacity + residual vol
-total amount of air that the lungs contain
how do u read the spirometer trace
line down = breathing in
line up = breathing out
how does a spirometer work
1)spirometer has an oxygen filled chamber with movable lid, person breaths through tube connected to it
2)lid moves up and down as person breaths in and out
3)pen attached creates a spirometer trace
4)soda lime in the tube absorbs carbon dioxide
why does the total volume of gas in chamber decrease over time
not all oxygen is breathed back into it as it is used up in respiration
what factors affect peak flow
-height, taller = bigger lungs
-age
-gender
-physical fittness
