Lung expansion therapy Flashcards
Encompasses a variety of respiratory care modalities designed to prevent/correct atelectasis.
Lung Expansion Therapy
A condition where there is a collapse or incomplete inflation of a portion or all the lungs.
Atelectasis
This type of atelectasis can occur either when there is a complete interruption of ventilation to a section of the lungs
or
wjen there is a significant shift in ventilatory/perfusion (V/Q).
Gas Absorption Atelectasis.
This type of atelectasis occurs when the transthoracic pressure exceeds the trans alveolar pressure.
Compression Atelectasis
Equipments used
Inspiratory spirometer
> Volumetric incentive spirometer
Patient-triggered, pressure-cycled form of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation that can assist with lung expansion.
Intermittent positive airway pressure breathing (IPPB)
A machine that uses mild air pressure to keep breathing airways open while you sleep. Your healthcare provider may prescribe ________ to treat sleep-related breathing disorders including sleep apnea.
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
Involves active heating and humidification of inspired air from an air/02 blender and its delivery to the patient through a heated circuit at a flow rate up to 60 mL per min.
High Flow Nasal Cannula Therapy
This therapy can provide benefits to heart failure patients even without sleeping disorder breathing (SDB) through its cardiac unloading effects.
Positive airway pressure (PAP)
take slow deep breaths focusing in filling their lungs completely and then exhaling fully.
Deep breathing exercise
Patient inhales deeply to raise a ball or piston in the device, indicating the volume of air inhaled.
Incentive spirometry
Patient inhale slowly through the nose and exhale slowly through pursed lip, as if blowing a candle.
Pursed lip breathing
patient to practice breathing using their, diaphragm rather than shallow chest breathing.
Diaphragmatic breathing
Teach effective coughing to help clear secretions from the lungs.
