Lumbar and Sacral plexus Flashcards
what are the roots of lumbar plexus
L1 L2 L3 L4
where is the site of the lumbar plexus
it originates in the posterior abdominal wall inside the substance of psoas major muscle, anterior to the transverse process of the lumbar vertebrae
what are the branches of lumbar plexus
iliohypogastric nerve
ilioingual nerve
genitofemoral nerve
lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh
obturator nerve
femoral nerve
function of the lumbar plexus
it supplies the anterolateral abdominal wall, external genitals and represents one of the main motor and sensory nerve supply of the lower limb
what does iliohypogastric and ilioingual supply?
give motor supply yo muscles of abdominal wall
what does the genitofemoral nerve supply?
sensory supply to external genitals and upper anterior thigh
what does the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh supply?
sensory supply to the lateral thigh
what does the femoral nerve supply?
supplies the muscles of the anterior compartment of the thigh+skin of anterior thigh
what does the obturator nerve supply?
supplies muscles of the medial compartment of the thigh as well as skin of the medial thigh
femoral nerve injury?
weakness in flexion of the hip and extension of the knee due to impairment of muscles of the anterior compartment of the thigh
obturator nerve injury?
weakness in adduction of the thigh
what are the roots of the sacral plexus?
L4 L5 S1 S2 S3 S4
where is the site of the sacral plexus
it originates in relation to the anterior surface of the pirisformis muscle
what are the branches of the sacral plexus?
sciatic nerve
pudenal nerve
superior gluteal nerve
inferior gluteal nerve
posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh
pelvis splanchnic nerve
perforating cutaneous nerve
direct branch to muscles of the pelvic wall and floor and lower limb
function of the sacral plexus
the sacral plexus supplies the muscles of the pelvis, perineum and contribute to the motor and sensory supply of the lower limb
