What do we know about the authorship of John’s Gospel? When was it
probably written?
John’s gospel was written between 90 and 100 AD he was an apostle
and his gospel was edited by the community which he lived in
Who is John’s audience? Why did the early Christians begin worshipping
separately from the Jews who did not believe Jesus was the Messiah?
John’s gospel was written for Jewish Christians who had been kicked
out of the synagogue for Samaritans and for Greeks. The Jewish
Christians were being kicked out of the synagogue because those
that were strictly Jewish felt that you needed to decide were you
either going to believe in Christ or not. If you were Speaking of Jesus
then you were not allowed into the synagogue and you needed to
just practice your faith somewhere else. This made the jewish
Christians upset and therefore did not like the Jewish religious
leaders anymore.
What is the opening of John’s Gospel called? What are the first 3 words?
What Old Testament story do that relate back to? Name one of the titles
the author of the Gospel of John uses to describe Jesus in the Prologue,
and describe how this title implies that Jesus is God. Explain “Logos.”
John’s gospel begins with his prologue and starts with the words in
the beginning this is supposed to connect you to the Old Testament
story of the creation. In the creation story he refers to the word and
the word is meaning Jesus in Greek the word for word is logos. This is
meant to establish Jesus divinity
What are the two major parts of John’s Gospel?
the book of signs in the book of glory
What are “signs” in John’s Gospel? What are they “signs” of?
the signs that John refers to are the miracles and they are to be an
indication of Jesus’s divinity. This is said because only God can create
miracles and since Jesus performed miracles he must be God
What do we mean by “I Am” statements? What do they relate to in the
Old Testament?
often John would use IAM statements when referring to Jesus such
as I am the bread of life. They relate to the Old Testament because
when Moses saw God at the burning Bush he referred to himself as
Yahweh which means I am who I am period this again shows Jesus’
Divinity.
What is the Book of Glory about?
the book of glory is about the final days of jesus’s life it covers his
arrest his death his resurrection and his post resurrection
appearances
Instead of sharing the account of Jesus instituting the Eucharist at the Last
Supper, what unique event does John relate instead?
John focuses on the washing of the feet at the Last Supper. He does
this to show that we should be servants to all and that we should
humble ourselves
What do we celebrate at the Feast of the Assumption?
