A

Maria the richest treasure a woman can posses is her virtue

18
Q

Act 2

MARIA: Nobody knows yet

A

You were definetely flirting

19
Q

MARIA: D’you want him yourself?

A

William Corder is my employer. I am his mother servant

20
Q

MARIA: He’s handsome though

A

Maria (hush)

He stares at me (wisper)

21
Q

MARIA: Lucy Baalham, you are a beautiful young woman, of course he stares. He’s a man

A

You never listen to what I say.
I have to go. There’ll be gleaning at dawn

22
Q

SARAH: Someone’s happy at any rate

A

Is everyone else done? Because I’m happy to take the rest

23
Q

MARIA: But my body has already told me that I am late. Far too late

A

I’ve just been sacked

24
Q

MARIA: Why?

A

Mrs. Corder found out about you two and that I knew and didnt tell her. She says I’m disloyal.

25
Q

MARIA: I’ll speak to William-

A

Did you ever stop to think what this would be like me. Being told by him that one day you could be my mistress.

26
Q

MARIA: The thing is-I can’t leave him

A

Then good luck to you both, but your on your own

27
Q

MARIA: I think I’m in trouble

A

So what? Do you ever stop to think about the trouble you’re causing?

28
Q

PHEOBE: You didn’t go to the trial today then?
Me either

A

I’m trying to remeber what she looked like. I can’t see her face.

29
Q

PHEOBE: That’s what death does. I like to rember the dancing. The Cherry Fair?

A

I do not wish to be comforted by you

30
Q

PHEOBE: Me?

A

Yes. No. Not by you.

31
Q

PHEOBE: I just caught sight of you from my window, that’s why I came. To see if you were alright.

A

You never asked before. None of you ever did.

32
Q

PHEOBE: Right then (standing) I’ll be on my way

A

You saw her body. You saw the bones, and the skull. You gave him the spade.

33
Q

PHEOBE: Yeah

A

How can you bear it. How are you even breathe.

34
Q

PHEOBE: My greif is none of your buisness

A

I don’t see your greif. I don;t see/any

35
Q

PHEOBE: You told her you didn’t want to see her again-we all knew that

A

Of course I didn’t-she was-

36
Q

PHEOBE: I’m not even sure I want to know

A

No ever like me. I’m not smart. Not witty, or clever, I don’t wear nice clothes. I don;t even have friends really-and dont pretend you’re all my friends because I know you’re not. You’re just hounoring the memory of what we were.

William used to to talk to me late into the night about the farm and his worries for the harvest. He was kind. He was different around me. One day in the parlour he grabbed my hand and said he was going to finish with Maria and marry me. We kissed. And I let him go. I thought it was a miracale-this tidal wave of joy

I went home, spent the whole nigh planning for the future. In the morning I packed a bag and took it to work.

And he behaved as if nothing had ever happend. When I tried to speak to him, he said he had o idea what I was talking about. He said it with such confidence that I began to think him right

Trust is he didn’t even care for me

He didn’t even care enough to kill me

37
Q

PHEOBE: Lucy-

A

I know I disgust myself

38
Q

PHEOBE: He was the devil- he made you feel like that

A

If he was the devil. I was tempted and I fell

I have to give evidence an the trial

39
Q

PHEOBE: We can help send him down

A

For the defence

40
Q

PHEOBE: What?

A

I am one of his character witnesses

41
Q

PHEOBE: Don’t stick up for him-

A

“He was always a kind and good natured man.” That’s what hiss lawyer has told me to say
