Q

Alberto Scorfano personality

A

proudly prizes his knowledge of the human world

in being alone for so many days in the lighthouse, was instantly eager to share it all with Luca.

He rarely takes things seriously

is all about having fun,

One of his dreams was to ride a Vespa, a special scooter depicted in a poster he had collected and stored in his home.

After meeting Luca, Alberto insisted on taking the lead.

Having an opportunity at making a friend gave him the chance to tell the younger sea monster everything he knew about the humans

despite Luca’s dislike of being told what to do.

Seeing Luca and Giulia bonding over common interests made Alberto distraught as he didn’t want to lose Luca, who was his only friend.

This was because Alberto’s father abandoned him as a child after believing he was old enough to live on his own.

After a while, his living situation led him to feel incredibly lonely, to the point where he can become possessive and angry at people, believing they will leave him and will be alone again if he doesn’t keep them close.

By the end of the movie,
he is more considerate of Luca and even sells the Vespa he’s always dreamed of having to give Luca a ticket to Genoa.

He formed a close bond to Massimo, who becomes a surrogate father figure to him, and was willing to stay in Portorosso with him while Luca could be happy in Genoa going to school with Giulia.

Giulia Marcovaldo background

A

Giulia was born to Massimo Marcovaldo, a fisherman, and Maria Marcovaldo, an artist.

At some point in her childhood, her parents separated

Massimo living in Portorosso and her mother living in Genoa.

Giulia stayed with her mother and her pet dog, Nerone, and attended school for most of the year, but stayed with Massimo and his pet cat, Machiavelli, for summer break.

Her summers in Portorosso often ended losing, however, as her participation in the Portorosso Cup race resulted in humiliation from the town bully Ercole Visconti.

During the year prior to the film’s Portorosso Cup race, Giulia lost due to getting sick from eating too much pasta, causing her to be nicknamed “Spewlia” by Ercole.

personality Giulia Marcovaldo

A

described herself as a local outcast in Portorosso who was different from the rest of the crowd as a way to explain her reasoning for standing up for Luca and Alberto.

Her dislike for Ercole because of being bullied by him often also helped fuel her actions.

She tried to paint herself as someone independent at first, as she was reluctant to accept help from runaways but began to open up to the two boys when they helped dislodge her bike from an out-of-place stone brick.

After losing and embarrassing herself at the Portorosso Cup race one time, Giulia developed a stronger desire to keep competing in the race until she won and beat Ercole, the five-time champion, to pay him back for always making her life miserable.

However, Giulia later reveals her strong desire to win is also a way for people to accept her for who she is, as she has been bullied due to being considered weird, especially after being humiliated the last time she entered the Portorosso Cup race.

As she gets to know Luca better, she tells him more about herself, including her interest in stargazing and her school in Genova.

Her giving her book on the universe away to Luca suggests that those she meets earn her trust after a period of time spent together with the person.

Giulia did not believe in sea monsters and was frightened when Alberto revealed himself as one.

She later discovered that Luca was one too, but knew they meant no harm and asked Luca to leave town as she feared for his safety.

Giulia stood up for Luca and Alberto against Ercole, and their friendship strengthened.

Q

Luca personality

A

Luca starts out as a very timid and shy but curious and imaginative character.

He is afraid of the surface, but is also very curious about it.

He meets Alberto, who Luca thinks is a human diver, but turns out to be like a sea monster just like him.

After Alberto introduces him to the surface, Luca attempts to confidently refuse staying there as he believes himself to be a “good kid.”

When he receives the opportunity to approach the surface shortly later on, his first reaction is reluctance to disobey his parents’ orders and see Alberto again.

As the movie progresses, Luca is able to expand on his curiosities about human life and what was on the surface as Alberto shows him his collection of human items.

Alberto is able to teach Luca to ignore his doubts and leave his comfort zone, which is how he gained his skills on a bicycle that he needed to compete in the Portorosso Cup.

He credits Alberto with teaching him how to be crazy.

Luca was also a very kind-hearted individual who was willing to stand up towards anyone who threatened to harm his friends.

Luca also held a strong desire to see the world above the surface, despite being forbidden by his parents in doing so.

Luca was very intrigued in learning new things, which he enjoyed doing while spending time in Portorosso and growing super excited when he learns something new.

He starts bonding with Giulia when she tells him about astronomy and the universe, which makes Luca want to go to school with her.

After deeply hurting Alberto, Luca attempts to make it up to him by winning the prize money for their Vespa.

He was even willing to come to Alberto’s rescue and expose himself as a sea monster when Ercole caught and attempted to kill Alberto when his sea monster identity was revealed during the Portorosso Cup.

By the end of the movie, Luca is much braver and wiser

despite how many people point out he is too old for it.

Q

Ercole Visconti personality

A

Ercole is a narcissistic bully, believing himself to be the best person in Portorosso

bullying others as a way to brag about his self-proclaimed success and as a show of strength.

He cares deeply for his reputation, going to any length to keep his track record as winner of the Portorosso Cup.

His ego causes him to delusionally believe that everyone in Portorosso adores and respects him when in fact nearly everyone despises him, even the local priest.

His approach to bullying can be physical, as seen when he tried to dunk Luca after he accidentally almost harmed his Vespa and when he punched Alberto when he tried to defend his friend.

He is also a bad boss, abusing his underlings to the point of them eventually rebelling against him and throwing him into the fountain after he insults them.

Ercole is also greedy, to the point of going to hunt for a sea monster upon hearing that there’s a reward for capturing one and even admitting upon hearing this that he is doing it for the mere idea of winning a prize at all.

he can also be murderous when he attempted to kill Alberto and Luca for both the reward and to win the race, in spite of being completely aware that they are as sentient as he is, revealing himself to be a self-centered sociopath.

Ercole is materialistic, displaying anger once Luca nearly harmed his Vespa and sadness when his sweater was wet due to being thrown into the fountain with him.

He is also shown to be very immature, as seen with his self-centered ways of bullying and constant entering of the Portorosso Cup, even though many have pointed out that Ercole’s getting too old to compete in the race.
