LU2 : Interpersonal Attraction Flashcards
Theme 1
Repeated exposure effect
- The phenomenon where the more frequently we encounter a stimulus, such as a person, object, or idea, the more we tend to develop a favorable evaluation of it.
- As familiarity increases, discomfort decreases, and positive reactions replace it
effect of proximity
proximity or physical nearness is a basic requirement that needs to be met before feelings of attraction can develop
increase exposure increases liking
frequency of exposure to person
->
feeling more comfortable with a person, more responsive
->
increase liking for that person
the effects of social media on proximity and repeated exposure
- allows us to form relationships without physical proximity
:. altering traditional dynamics - heavy use can lead to depression (comparison to others and their lives)
role of physical beauty in interpersonal attraction?
- influences how we perceive and interact with others
- Attractive individuals often perceived favourably
3.
‘what is beautiful is good’ effect
- individuals create positive stereotypes for people who are good looking.
- If we have favourable stereotype for physically attractive people, shape how we perceive and think about them.
- Attractiveness is associated with popularity, good interpersonal skills, and high self esteem = may be others responding to their appearance.
- People who are attractive may use their appearance to persuade or influence others.
2 types of attractive women
Cute - [Large widely spaced eyes and small nose & chin]
mature - [Prominent cheekbones, high eyebrows, large pupils and a big smile]
second approach - what makes people physically attractive
(Langlois & Roggman (1990). )
- Used facial photographs & used a computer to digitize to combine multiple faces into one image.
- The more faces they added the more attractive the face!
- each persons representation of men/women - created in a similar way to that of the composite face
= thats why we have our own idea of. how attractive someone is
