LTM and STM Flashcards

Q

Evaluate the following study: BADDELEY 1966 coding in STM and LTM

A

Other research has found that STM uses visual coding when given visual task and when verbal rehearsal is prevented. Other research has found STM uses semantic coding. Both go against Baddeley.

Other research found evidence of acoustic coding in LTM.

Q

Evaluate the following study: BAHRICK et al. 1975 duration of LTM

A

High mundane realism- the task is something we might do in real life ie trying to recall old class mates.

No control over extraneous variables. Eg some pp’s might have seen their old class mates recently which could have effected the findings.

Q

Evaluate the following study: PETERSON & PETERSON 1959 duration of STM

A

Low mundane realism- this task does not reflect every day memory activities, we usually try to remember meaningful things eg shopping list.

In contrast research by Marsh et al (1997) found the duration of STM to be even shorter. This weakens Petersons and Petersons findings.

Q

Evaluate the following study: MILLER 1956 capacity of STM

A

Contradictory research comes from Cowan who suggested capacity of STM is actually only 4 chunks. Which goes against Miller.

Millers 7 +/-2 doesn’t take into account individual differences and other research found recall increased with age ie 8yrs= 6.6 items but 19yrs=8.6
