CNS depression Respiratory depression hypotension bradycardia constipation (May cause abdominal upset)
How do opioid analgesic medications work?
Alter the perception of pain and the body’s response to painful stimuli
Depresses the central nervous system
What drug class is Tramadol in?
Analgesic (controlled)
What is the trade name for Tramadol?
Ultram
What drug class is Ultram in?
Analgesic (controlled)
How is Tramadol administered?
PO (can also be a scheduled IV controlled substance, but that is less common.
When can Ultram be given?
PRN or scheduled for pain control
Why is Tramadol given?
For moderate to moderately severe pain
How does Tramadol/Ultram work?
Binds to opioid receptors to decrease transmission of pain. Decreases pain within the body
What needs to be assessed BEFORE and AFTER the administration of Tramadol/Ultram?
Pain, RR, BP, HR, SpO2, LOC
What can Tramadol/Ultram cause?
CNS depression, constipation
If there is prolonged use of Tramadol/Ultram, what needs to be assessed?
Tolerance or addiction
What medication is an antipyretic?
Acetaminophen
What medication is a nonopioid analgesic?
Acetaminophen
What drug classes is MAPAP in?
Antipyretic, Nonopioid analgesic
How is Tylenol administered?
PO, suppository
Why is Acetaminophen given?
To treat mild pain or fever
How does MAPAP work?
Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis within the body preventing fever and pain.
What does Tylenol not prevent?
Inflammation
When is Acetaminophen given?
PRN, Daily
What is the maximum daily dose of Acetaminophen?
4 grams
What is the maximum daily dose of Acetaminophen is the patient has liver disease?
3 grams
What labs need to be monitored if Tylenol is taken daily?
Liver function labs (AST, ALT, ALP)
What needs to be assessed before and after giving tylenol?
Pain (if being given for pain)
Temperature (if being given for fever)
*If Tylenol is ordered PRN for pain, do NOT give Tylenol for a fever. A new order will be needed.
