Do the Marxists view religion as causing conflict in society?
No, they don’t. Marxists believe that religion prevents conflict in society by working on behalf of the ruling classes to suppress a revolution.

The working class.
Who are the bourgeoisie?
The ruling class.
What does it mean to be alienated?
When someone is removed from something they have produced.
How are the proletariat exploited?
The are alienated from the production process as they do not own what they produce and are exploited through low pay by the bourgeoisie.
What is a false class consciousness?
a distorted view of reality that prevents the poor from acting to change their situation.
What is ideology for Marxists?
a belief system that distorts people’s perception of reality in the interests of the ruling class.
What S C is religion seen as?
A social construction made by the ruling class to transmit their ideas and beliefs of capitalism onto the working class.
What is an ideological state apparatus?
Institutions such as the education, justice and healthcare system.
How is religion used as an ideological state apparatus to benefit the bourgeoisie?
Religion controls the feelings of the workers and prevents them wanting a revolution (social change).
