LT#2: Acids, Bases and Writing Ionization Equations Flashcards
What are the steps to name a Binary Acid?
Step 1: prefix “hydro”
Step 2: root name of non-metal
Step 3: suffix “ic acid”
What are the rules to name a Oxyacid?
IF the poly ends in “ate” change it to “ic acid”
IF the poly ends in “ite” change it to “ous acid”
DO NOT ADD hydro to beginning oxyacids
How do you name Bases?
No changes (same rules as ionic compounds)
What are the steps/rules for writing ionization equations?
- Water breaks apart compound into ions.
- For acids, only one H+ falls off
- For bases, all OH– fall off. Need to balance equation after.
- All states must remain aq
Define Binary Acid
Composed of hydrogen and a non-metal
Bases + Metals –>
Nothing
Name NH3
Ammonia (example of weak base)
Name KOH
Potasium hydroxide
What is the formula for copper (II) hydroxide?
Cu(OH)2
Define Arrhenius Base
A substance that ionizes to produce hydroxide ions (OH1-) when dissolved in water.
Define Strong
Fully ionizes or dissociates in solution
What is the formula for thiosulphuric acid?
H2S2O3
Acids turn Phenolphtalaein
Clear
Define Arrhenius Acid
A substance that ionizes to produce hydrogen ions (H1+) when dissolved in water.
Acids + Metals –>
H2 bubbles
