Taxation without Representation; Sons of Liberty; Patriots/Loyalists/Neutralists
The idea that if a group of people pays taxes to support a government but they are not allowed to vote for people to represent them in government. (They are paying for a government they don’t have a say in.)
Taxation without Representation
This phrase represented a major source of conflict between the colonists and the British. The colonists were being taxed to pay for British wars, but they were not allowed to vote in British government.
Taxation without Representation
This group of men was responsible for organizing protests and boycotts against the British. Some of their protests were violent- like “tar and feather”, effigies, and pouring hot tea down the throats of tax collectors.
Sons of Liberty
This groups included Patriots like Patrick Henry, Samuel Adams, and Paul Revere.
Sons of Liberty
Colonists who supported the idea of independence from Britain. They were ready to go to war for freedom.
Patriots
Colonists who remained loyal to the British crown and Britain’s policies.
Loyalists
This group of colonists included wealthy colonists and large landowners, enslaved Africans who hoped for freedom, and Native Americans who were afraid they would lose land to the colonists.
Loyalists
This group of colonists were people who didn’t pick aside regarding independence. They were not Patriots, and they were not Loyalists.
