LS6003 TB1 Antibacterial chemotherapy Flashcards
fill in
what is the main difference between gram postive/negative bacteria and acid fast bacteria
+ = thick peptidoglycan outer layer
- = thin peptidoglycan (periplasm), contains outer membrane endotoxins
acid fast = waxy mycolic layer, makiing them difficult to penetrate and therefore treat
give an examle of acid fast bacteria
TB
what is the main class 2 reaction found in prokaryotes?
Folate synthesis
Only fungi, bacteria and plants can synthesise folate. Animals acquire through diet.
What are the 3 main class 3 reactions found in prolaryotes, in order of viability to attack with antimicrobials.
peptidoglycan synthesis(easiest method of attackin bacteria as they are dividing at this point)
protein synthesis
Nucleic acid synthesis
what is the best phase in the bacteria population growth curve, to attack bacteria?
exponential phase, with something that interupts peptidoglycan production.
`in what stage of the bacteria population growth curve does the physiology of cells start to change, and ‘antibiotics’ start being produced by the bacteria?
stationary phase, to kill of competition
what are some of the characterisitcis of a bacteril spore?
dormant until germinated, vrey hard to remove as completely dehydrated/inactive, only vunerable(able to be attackd) when germinated
agents that kill are known as ?
agents that inhibit are known as?
cidal
static
is human sensitivity to antibiotics more or less variable than microbial sensitivity?
human sensitivity to antibiotics is less variable than microbial sensitivity
what are the 2 conditions that must be met for an antibiotic to be classed as ‘effective’
-achievable concentration at site of infection for a significant period of time during treatment
-concentration must be higher than minimum inhibitory concentration
what are the 5 factors associated with effective concentration
-route of admin orf antiobiotic
-distribution around body tissue
-extent of binding to plasma proteins
-rate and route of exretion
-number and staging of doses
define antimicrobial chemotherapy
the use of antimicrobial chemicals to treat and cure infectious diseases
