LS3 - Cognitive Explanations For SZ Flashcards
Cognitive Explanations
Focuses on the role of mental processes i.e. dysfunctional thought processing.
Two Types Of Dysfunctional Thought Processing
Metarepresentation
Central Control
Metarepresentation
The ability to reflect on thoughts and behaviours which gives us an insight into our own intentions and goals. Therefore dysfunction means we can’t recognise our own actions and thoughts as our own explaining auditory hallucinations
Central Control
The ability to suppress responses while we perform other actions. Speech poverty/thought disorder could result from the inability to ignore your own automatic thoughts as well as what other could be saying to you.

Cause And Effect
Doesn’t Account For Biological Factors
Strong Evidence (+)
Stirling Et Al compared 30 patients with SZ with 18 random mans doing cognitive tasks e.g. stroke effect. Patients with SZ took twice as long to say the word suggesting dysfunctional thought processing is part of SZ.
Stroop Effect
when the colour word is written in a different colour and you have to say the actual colour of the word.
Success Of CBT (+)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy combined with drug therapy questions and challenges hallucinations and delusions and has proven to be very effective.
Cause And Effect (-)
It’s difficult to establish whether dysfunctional thought processing is a symptom or the cause of SZ.
