LR Questions Strategies Flashcards
- Look for conditional statements
- Pay close attention to logical force of the propositions
3a. If conditional statements, diagram and anticipate CP and/or transitive conclusions
3b. If no conditionals, look for other relationships between the statements
Anticipate: WEAK answer choice
MBT
COMMON FEATURES OF INCORRECT
- Converse or inverse
- Statements that are too strong
- Statements outside the scope of the stim
- Causes or explanations for phenomena discussed in the stim
- Hypotheses about the future or what would have happened if something changed
MBT
- Look for conditional statements
- Pay close attention to the logical force of the propositions
3a. If conditional statements (RARE): diagram and anticipate CP and/or transitive conclusions
3b. If no conditional statements: look for relationships between the statements
Anticipate: WEAK answer choice
Anticipate: Summary of the stimulus
~MBT
CRITERIA FOR CORRECT ANSWER
-Very strongly supported by the information in the stimulus BUT doesn’t necessarily absolutely need to be true
~MBT
COMMON FEATURES OF INCORRECT ANSWERS
- Converse/inverse
- Statements that are too strong
- Statements that are outside the scope of the stim
- Causes or explanations for phenomena discussed in the stim
- Hypotheses about the future or what would have happened if something changed
~MBT
CRITERIA FOR CORRECT ANSWER
Definitively proven true by the info in the stim (incorrect answers could be false)
MBT
- Look for conditional statements
- Pay close attention to the logical force
3a. If conditional -> diagram them and anticipate an answer choice that disagrees with (violates) a valid conditional
3b. If no conditional -> look for other relationships between the statements and anticipate an answer choice that would violate these relationships
ANTICIPATE: An answer choice that violates a conditional or violates the relationships between the statements in the stim
MBF
CRITERIA FOR CORRECT ANSWER
-Definitely proven false by the statements in the stimulus
MBF
COMMON INCORRECT ANSWERS
- Statements that could be true based on the stim, even if they are unlikely
- Statements that are too strong
- Statements that are outside the scope of the stim
- Causes or explanations for phenomena discussed in the stim
- Hypotheses about the future or what would have happened if something changed
MBF
- Look for key words that indicate premises and conclusions
- Look for words that indicate a shift in attitude (but, however)
- Look for evaluative statements that indicate AA
- Do not waste time evaluating the validity of the argument
Main Point
CRITERIA FOR CORRECT ANSWER
-The main conclusion of the argument
Main Point
COMMON CORRECT ANSWERS
- Expressions of the author’s attitude or prescriptive statements (should, ought)

Main Point
COMMON INCORRECT ANSWERS
- Statements that do not need to be true
- Premises, subsidiary conclusions
