Lower Limb Vasculature Flashcards
What does the abdominal aorta branch into distally?
Common iliac arteries
What arteries do the common iliacs branch into?
Gives off internal iliac artery and continues as external iliac artery
What artery follows the external iliac artery?
Common femoral artery
What arteries branch form the common femoral artery?
Deep femoral artery (profunda femoris) and common femoral artery continues as superficial femoral artery
What artery does the superficial femoral artery become?
Popliteal artery
What branches does the popliteal artery give off?
Anterior tibial artery
Posterior tibial artery
Fibular/peroneal artery
What artery does the anterior tibial artery give off?
Dorsalis pedis artery
What does the internal iliac artery supply?
Pelvic organs and structures
When does the external iliac become the common femoral artery?
When it passes under the inguinal ligament
What does the deep femoral artery supply?
Posterior and lateral thigh and the femur via circumflex arteries and perforating branches
What does the superficial femoral artery supply?
Anterior thigh and some knee
When does the superficial femoral artery become the popliteal artery?
When it passes through the adductor hiatus which is in the adductor Magnus muscle
What does the anterior tibial artery supply?
Anterior leg compartment + dorsum of foot and dorsum of metatarsals as dorsalis pedis
+ toes via deep plantar arch
What does the dorsal pedis artery (from the anterior tibial artery) supply?
Tarsals and dorsum of metatarsals
Toes via deep plantar arch
What does the posterior tibial artery supply?
Posterior leg compartment
Plantar side of foot
Toes via deep plantar arch
What structure does the posterior tibial artery pass through?
What other structure does it pass through with?
Tarsal tunnel
Tibial nerve
What does the fibular artery supply?
Lateral compartment of leg
Label the image on “lower limb vasculature” slide
If not talk out loud the blood supply to lower limbs from the aorta
What nerve is most commonly at risk in a popliteal aneurysm?
Tibial nerve
How does tibial nerve compression in the popliteal fossa present?
Foot drop (absent plantar Flexion)
Paraesthesia of posterolateral leg
What is the sensory innervation of the deep fibular nerve?
Dorsum web space between 1st and 2nd toe
What is the motor innervation of the deep fibular nerve?
Ankle dorsi Flexion
Toe extension
What is the sensory innervation of the superficial fibular nerve?
Most of dorsum of foot (except the 1st webbed space)
What is the motor innervation of the superficial fibular nerve?
Supplies fibular is longus and brevis which evert and plantar flex the foot
What is the sensory innervation of the tibial nerve?
Sole of foot via medial and lateral plantar nerves
What is the motor function of the tibial nerve?
(Posterior leg compartment)
Plantar Flexion of foot
Flexion of toes
