Lower Limb Muscles Flashcards
1
Q
Gluteal muscles (5)
A
- gluteus maximus
- gluteus medius
- gluteus minimus
- tensor fascia latae
- share same nerve, either superior gluteal or inferior gluteal nerves
2
Q
Gluteus maximus (7)
A
- largest of 3 gluteal muscles
- arises from the outer surface of the ilium behind the posterior gluteal line, the sacrum and coccyx
- it inserts into the iliotibial tract and the gluteal tuberosity of the femur
- acting from its origin it extends the thigh straightening the lower limb on the trunk when a person is running or climbing
- the action of gluteus maximus can also be reversed - it can act from its insertion. In this case, the trunk is extended or straightened after bending over to pick something up
- acting with tensor fasciae latae it also pulls the fascia lata upwards and this helps to stabilise the knee joint
- gluteus maximus is supplied by the inferior gluteal nerve
3
Q
Gluteus medius (4)
A
- arises from outer surface of the ilium below the iliac crest
- it inserts into the lateral surface of the greater trochanter
- abducts femur at hip an rotates the thigh medially
- supplied by the superior gluteal nerve
4
Q
Gluteus minimus (4)
A
- arises from the gluteal surface of the ilium between the anterior and inferior gluteal lines
- it inserts into the anterior surface of the greater trochanter
- abducts the hip and produces medial rotation
- supplied by the superior gluteal nerve
5
Q
Tensor fasciae latae (4)
A
- arises from the anterior illiac crest
- inserts into the upper part of the iliotibial tract (the iliotibial tract is a thickenes band of the fasciae latae that lies on the lateral side of the thigh)
- it actions are flexion and abduction of rhe hip joint. Acting with gluteus maximus it also pulls the fascia lata upwards; this action of the 2 muscles helps to stabilise the knee joint
- it is supplied by the superior gluteal nerve
6
Q
4 groups muscles acting on thigh (4)
A
- gluteal muscles
- flexor group
- adductors
- lateral rotators
