Lower Limb Flashcards
What are the six regions of the lower limb?
Gluteal Femoral Knee Leg Ankle Foot
What are the superficial muscles of the gluteal region?
Gluteus Maximus
Gluteus Medius
Gluteus Minimus
Tensor Fascia Latae
Nerve supply to the superficial muscles of the gluteal region? (2 nerves)
Superior gluteal nerve = Medius, Minimus, tensor fascia latae
Inferior gluteal nerve = Maximus
Which nerve is damaged if someone has a Trendelenburg’s Gait?
Superior Gluteal Nerve
What are the deep muscles of the gluteal region?
Piriformis
Gemelli
Obturator internus
Quadratus femoris
Which nerves supply deep muscles of the gluteal region?
Nerves from the Sacral plexus
At which points do nerves enter/exit the pelvis and perineum respectively?
Greater sciatic foramen
Lesser sciatic foramen
Where in the gluteal region should an IM injection be given? And why?
Upper lateral quadrant
To avoid hitting nerves.
Which vertebral levels does the sciatic nerve arise from?
L4-S3
Which two nerves, bundled together, forms the sciatic nerve?
Tibular and Common fibular
Which nerve arises from vertebral levels S2,3,4? And what does it supply?
Pudenal nerve
Supplies the perineum
Where does the sciatic nerve normally separate into tibial and common fibular nerves?
The distal thigh
Which ligaments help form the sciatic foramen?
Sacrotuberous and sacrospinous ligaments
Which sensory nerve runs along side the sciatic nerve and supplies the skin on the posterior aspect of the lower limb?
Posterior cutaneous nerve
At which vertebral level does the spinal cord end? and therefore which vertebral level should a lumbar puncture be performed at?
Spinal cord ends - L1/2
Lumbar puncture performed at - L3/4
