Lower Limb 1- Gluteal Region Flashcards
What ligament converts the greater sciatic notch into the greater sciatic foramen
Sacrospinous ligament
What makes up the hip joint
Acetabulum of the innominate bone articulates with the head of the femur to form a ball and socket joint
What ligament convert the lesser sciatic notch into the lesser sciatic foramen
Sacrospinous and sacrotuberous ligaments
Names of the 3 extra capsular ligaments of the hip joint
Iliofemoral, ischiofemoral, pubofemoral ligaments
Nerve supply to gluteus maximus
Inferior gluteal nerve (L5-S2)
Nerve supply to gluteus medius and minimus
Superior gluteal nerve (L5-S1)
Chief abductors at the hip joint + medial rotation
Gluteus medius and minimus
Proximal attachments of gluteal muscles
Gluteus maximus: posterior to posterior gluteal line on posterior external surface of ilium + posterior inferior surface of sacrum and sacrotuberous ligament
Gluteus medius: between anterior and posterior gluteal lines on external surface of ilium
Gluteus minimus: between anterior and inferior gluteal lines on external ilium
Action of gluteus maximus
Extend and laterally rotates thigh at hip joint. Stabilises extended knee via iliotibial tract + assisting standing from a seated position
Lateral rotators at hip
Piriformis, superior and inferior gemelli, obturator internus and quadratus femoris
Which lateral rotator passes through the greater sciatic foramen
Piriformis
Which lateral rotator passes through the lesser sciatic foramen
Obturator internus
Where does quadratus femoris distally attach to and what is its function
Attaches to intertrochanteric crest. It’s a lateral rotator and helps steady the femoral head in the acetabulum
What does the obturator internus nerve supply
Obturator internus and superior gemellus
What does nerve to quadratus femoris supply
Quadratus femoris and inferior gemellus
